The World Wide Web runs most businesses today. You can either find work online or have your own business. In starting your own business, the first step that you must take is to build your own site to establish web presence. In building your own site, web design will play a big part either in your success or failure.

Website design is a term used to describe the creation of sites online. The person who wants to pursue this career must be able to design websites and programs that are functional as well as visually pleasing for the visitors. The good news is that you do not have to possess a four year degree to be able to design a basic website for you or for your clients.

This will be the resume of the future, and, even if you don’t know HTML, you can do one (see Job-Hunt’s Internet Resume section for help). You might need to rent space on a Web “server” (a computer that makes Web sites available to the whole Internet) to “host” your resume files (publish them). Or, your Internet Service Provider may provide free server space for you to publish your resume Web site.

Limit the contact information to only your e-mail address on your personal resume Web site.

Your personal portfolio Web site should be like your resume with the following exceptions:

8 Ways to Buff Your Professional Image—Online

Getting ahead still requires a firm handshake and sparkling personality, but your online persona is just as important these days. Most recruiters use search engines like Google, Yahoo, or MSN to learn more about would-be candidates for the jobs they’re filling. Yet many professionals remain digital dabblers who can call up a corporate bio or other tidbits about themselves but who haven’t cultivated a cohesive online identity.

The result can be a disjointed online presence. One challenge is making sure that when someone types your name into a search engine, the best info about you rises to the top instead of getting buried below lots of irrelevant stuff. Another common problem: Other people with similar names might elbow you off the first page of search results. Or even worse, the top results of a Google search include way-too-candid party photos, court documents relating to your divorce, or other embarrassing material you wish you could retract.

Three Stages of a Job Search

Preparation - lay the foundation for an efficient and effective job search.

Implementation - do the actual job search

Suspension/Maintenance - put your search efforts into suspension, but don’t shut down completely. It will be easier to re-start the next time if it’s still “warm.”
